iDisplay - Gesture and Tangible Computing On The Cheep

Found this video of tangible computer and gesture recognition system on NUIGroup.org. According to NUIGroup.org:

"Lahiru a 22 years old Software Engineering student from the Informatic Institute of Sri Lanka brings us the iDisplay showcasing some intriguing in air gesturing (Pinch the future between your thumb and your forefinger. ) .

An inexpensive solution to retrofit existing flat displays into interactive surfaces. No expensive sensors, no Infrared based techniques, no Soldering, no Compliant surface, no Closed windows, no patents infringements, no broken money box . Only a regular off-the-shelf webcam and a regular LCD monitor . "

The circles are an example of tangible computing; the manipulations with the circle made by the thumb and forefinger are the gestures. This actually isn't multi-touch because the hands do not touch the surface of the display.

Although the applications here are fairly limited it does illustrate how smart people can make Natural User Interfaces with very little money. In my opinion, it an excellent illustration of how quickly NUI technologies will become inexpensive and mainstream.
