Ubisoft has posted a promotional video for a new game R.U.S.E. which they will be releasing soon. The video shows two guys playing the Real Time Strategy (RTS) War game on a large multitouch table. The visuals are stunning.
The product being released by Ubisoft won't be a multitouch table nor will it be playable on a Microsoft Surface - its being released for XBox 360 and Windows PCs - so the video is just a gimmick, but its a good one. It's a glimpse into the possible future of video games on multitouch tables. It's pretty cool to say the least.

Dude, yes it was cool but the interactions as a MT table game concept were really bad. It was a gimmick, a bad gimmick.
1) The guy attacking with boats apparently had full control over the entire table's view. Competing sides would need independent views. (Think the classic battleship game. The partition is there for a reason.)
2) The guy defending's entire gesture set was "bang on the table to make things fire" plus maybe one gesture to enable things to fire. No target selection, no strategy. Even from a classic RTS perspective, that's requiring horrible micromanagement. Starcraft grunts fired for themselves -- you got to tell them where to go and what strategy to use.
3) The big reveal of extra ships and airplanes at the end -- how did one player know about these and not the other? There were no extra controls or screens to view the status of backup or reinforcements. When did he organize them without the other player seeing?
Done right this type of game could be awesome. This video did not do it right though. The tabletop graphics were good though.
You made a lot of excellent points, Josh! I don't disagree at all!
I just thought it was a cool video, not necessary a well designed multitouch application.
the idea of games on multitouch table is briliant. i'd love to have all my tablegames (eg. warcraft, warhammer, ticket to the ride and so on...) on one table .... :} when i dont have to pickup and sort all cards after party ... which gives me one more extra hour to play... and so on.. there are plenty advantages
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
