NotchUp is very clever

The other day I received an invitation form an acquaintance to post my job information on NotchUp.com - currently in beta. The idea behind NotchUp is that employers pay you to interview you for a job. You are under no obligation to accept the job, just be willing to be interviewed. You set your own price then wait for the opportunities to pour in.

Ok, so if you are like you me you are probably thinking at this point, “boy is that a stupid business plan!” But wait, there’s more!

NotchUp allows you to invite others to sign up for the service and if one of the people you recruit gets an interview, NotchUp will pay you a 10% referral fee. Sounding a little smarter now isn’t it? There is still more.

With one click of a button you can send invitations to every one of your LinkedIn friends. I know the LinkedIn connection works because I sent out invites to most of my LinkedIn friends just to see what happens. Fourteen of them signed up to the service within 10 hours. Ah yes, LinkedIn may finally pay off.

In order for the network effect to work, there has to be a carrot. The chance to make money for being interviewed is good, but chance to make money every time one of your friends gets interviewed is even better.

Looks like someone is picking up NotchUp’s slack. Applicant Tree is doing essentially the same thing, but at a much better price for businesses. What’s more, I don’t have to waste time interviewing someone that could end up being unacceptable, I can purchase their information and do a phone interview if I want to. This model favors the companies far more than NotchUp and still offers something to the prospects.
